Tips for Choosing a Preschool

It happens all too fast! One day they're our little baby demanding to be fed every two hours and then the next day we are choosing the perfect preschool.  The high expectations set for our children when it comes to education is much higher than when I was a child. With kindergarten now being a full day, we have greater expectations both academically and socially.  To help prepare my child for the rigorous curriculum in kindergarten, I feel preschool is very important.  

There are many different preschool programs available.  There are half day and full day options. The choice to attend every day or as little as twice a week.  If you work full time, than most likely you will want to enroll your child in a full day program.  But the kicker is, preschool does not have childcare hours.  Full day preschool is typically 9-4 and half day 9-12 (depending on place).  If you are working, these hours can be difficult to swing.  

To get started, ask yourself these questions.

1. Do you want your child to attend a full day or half day program?

2. Do you want your child to go every day, three times a week or even possibly twice a week?

Now it's time to do your homework.

1. Find a few preschool options near the location you are looking. Ask yourself, do I want it to be close to home or close to work?

2. Browse the preschool's website.  Google search the name and see what you find. 

3. What is their reputation like? Ask around to see if you know of anyone who has attended preschool at the location.  Luckily with social media, it's easy to reach out and ask other friends and family. 

4. Find out if there is before and after school childcare available. This may be necessary for working parents.

Once you've done your homework it's time to schedule a visit. 

Try to schedule your visit during the day when children are learning.  This will give you good insight on how the children behave in the learning environment. Observe the structure of the program and how comfortable the children appear.   If you see a parent dropping off their child, ask them if they would recommend you sending your child there.    

Here are a few things to look for when visiting your potential preschool.

1. Over all cleanliness.  I was particular about the childrens' restrooms, floors, and the classroom tables.

2. Staff turnover.  How long have the teachers taught there?  

3. An example of your child's day.  Ask for a walk through on what will be expected of your child and the structure of the day. 

4. Security.  How do you feel overall?  Comfortable and safe?  

5. Did you feel welcomed and was staff open and willing to answer your questions?  Did the director of the program introduce him/herself?  Can you feel comfortable asking questions? 

Once you've decided on your school of choice, the next big step is reserving your spot.  Good schools fill up quickly.  Expect to sign your child up months in advance.
