Essential oils and their various health benefits are becoming popular among many as we are beginning to advocate for natural health products. Essential oils can be used to help promote relaxation, eliminate stress, purify the air, nourish the skin, and help eliminate aches and pains. They can be used to help regulate hormones and even fight inflammation. Oils can also be used for cleaning and disinfecting hard surfaces within the home.
The use of essential oils date back to the Egyptians where they used herbal medicine and oils to deepen meditation. The essential oil Frankincense was known as the "perfume of the gods". Today essential oils are widely used and sold anywhere from health food stores to online.
One oil in particular that is gaining popularity because of its medicinal properties is Helichrysum italicum. Helichrysum has been known for its antiallergenic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and astringent properties. It's particularly used for the treatment of skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. Helichrysum is considered to be a non toxic, non-irritant safe oil and can be used on people of all ages.
A few drops of Helichrysum goes a long way. Whenever using essential oils, it is recommended that one uses a carrier oil when applying directly to the skin. Examples of carrier oils are jojoba oil, vitamin E oil, coconut oil, and almond oil. There are many ways you can mix essential oils with a carrier oil. You can do a few drops in your hand or make into a roller ball. An example of a roller ball blend is pictured below.

About Essentials by DDRX
The story on how we started importing and bottling our own Helichrysum is worth its own post but I'll give you a little idea at how special this oil is to us. It all started with wanting to learn more about essential oils and their health benefits. Then came the communications with a small organic farm in Bosnia Herzegovina that inspired us to learn more. After much research and direct contact with the farm, we purchased some oil to share with you. We don't have intentions on bottling a lot of oil but we do believe that when we find something as wonderful as this organically grown Helichrysum, we must share at a price that is fair! Now we have a limited quantity to share with you. Our oil can be purchased here. Enjoy!
If you've tried our oil, please comment below and share your thoughts.

Elderberry Syrup is known for its health benefits but can have some side effects. Please research elderberries and understand both risks and benefits. This post may contain affiliate links.
Make your own Elderberry Syrup
When trying to treat or prevent an illness, Elderberry Syrup is an excellent immunity booster. Elderberry Syrup comes from the Sambucus Plant which is found in the northern hemisphere of North America and Europe.
There are many health benefits from taking elderberries. They have been known to reduce allergy symptoms, fight bacteria and infection, along with strengthen our immune systems.
I'm sure you are hearing a lot about elderberry syrup since it is cold and flu season. You can find elderberry syrup for sale at your local health stores and I'm even seeing commercial ads on television. But for a fraction of the cost, you can make your own. The best part is you know exactly what is in it and it is super easy!
Let's Talk Ingredients
All ingredients can be found at any health store and or grocery store. The elderberries can be a little challenging. I've found them in the bulk food sections where you can purchase by weight at Fresh Thyme Market or you can purchase here online. The 1lb bag will last you quite some time. So far I've made quite a few batches and still have a half bag of dried berries. My guess is the 1lb bag I purchased will last me through summer.
Elderberry Prices
I paid around 18.00 for my 1 pound bag. Currently prices are up on elderberries due to the high demand and it appears the main company that sells elderberries to the distributors has their dehydrator down. My guess is in a few weeks we will see these prices vary and go down a bit. What you Need
- 3/4 cup of dried organic elderberries
- 1 cup of organic raw honey
- 3 cups of water
- 2 tablespoons of freshly grated organic ginger
- 1 teaspoon of organic cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon of organic cloves (can be purchased by weight also)
The Process
Add all ingredients except the honey in a pot and bring to a boil. Then cover and reduce to a simmer for about 45 minutes.
You are looking to simmer until the liquid reduces to about half. I periodically use a fork and mash the berries to release its juices. In the end you will strain the berries from the liquid.
Once you've reduced the liquid, it's time to strain the berries from the juice.
Time for Honey
The honey is the last ingredient you will add. Add the honey once the liquid has cooled to room temperature. Once it's cooled, stir in the honey. There you go... You have Elderberry Syrup!
Storage
You can place in a glass jar or bottle and store in the refrigerator. I've read that it's good for a few weeks and I've read it is good for a few months. I say it's good until it's gone! It doesn't last long at our house. The kids ask for it every day and never let me forget.
How much to Consume
We take one teaspoon daily for immunity boosting properties during cold and flu season. When we are under the weather, I boost the dosage to 3 teaspoons a day or whenever the kids ask.
I've also read that it is beneficial to take it for 5 days and then take 2 days off and then repeat. Supposedly the 2 day break helps give your immune system a boost.
Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture of the final product. I will add that here soon but until then...it is time for you to make your own elderberry syrup!
Summer has come to an end, and for many of us, swim lessons have come to an end also. Now we begin our fall sports such as soccer, football, and dance. The fall weather changes our pace a bit and our weekends fill up quickly with new activities.
I'm a clear example of someone that has stopped swim lessons for my little ones once summer was over. I thought... well they are not swimming much anymore. In reality not at all! Plus Michigan is frozen for months and therefore I could justify not taking swim lessons in fall and winter. It wasn't until this year that I changed my mindset and realized that swimming should be a priority year round if I wanted my young children to master this "life skill".
Swimming is a life skill that requires regular practice to master. As a parent, I know that the sooner my children master basic swim skills, the sooner I can enjoy being around a pool. If we don't provide children with the opportunity to grow as swimmers they will begin next summer a step below from where they ended this summer. When I think of any sport, they all require practice for growth. This also goes for swimming. In order to swim well you must swim.
| Practicing our swim skills! |
I am so proud of the growth my kids experienced this summer. They swam a lot and the regular practice really helped them grow as swimmers. After experiencing such amazing growth, I don't want them to loose these skills that they worked so hard to gain. I believe that continuing lessons will be critical for their growth into next summer.

Eight is the common number of colds a toddler gets in a year. That is almost a cold a month! There are about 200 cold viruses present to catch. The good news is, once you have a particular cold virus, you build immunity to it. But since there are so many to catch, you are likely to come in contact with a new one at any given time. And the kicker is, you can receive colds back to back. You get over one and get another. This can get tiring on both the caregiver and the child.
We had a horrible year of colds last year. If I had to guess, we surpassed the average number of 8. I bet we had one a month! It was TERRIBLE. Luckily we survived and hopefully we built some major immunity.
While sharing my frustration with a co-worker, she shared with me a very simple recipe she keeps on hand for building immunity and fighting off colds. This is a recipe she used as a child in China and now uses with her own children.
I love this simple immunity booster because all you need is two common ingredients..raw local honey and lemons. The reason for a local honey is because it is believed to help with local allergens. Of course, if you don't have a local honey readily available feel free to use any honey. I also prefer organic lemons because they are free of synthetic pesticides but this again is just a preference.
What you need:
How to prepare:
This is so simple. Wash your lemons well. Cut into slices and place in jar. Keep the rind on the slices. Now pour honey over lemons. It will fill in the creases of the lemons. Cover and fill jar completely with honey. Place in refrigerator. After 3 days it should be ready to begin using. The lemon and the honey becomes a delicious liquid to use in teas and hot water.
Serve daily in hot water. I even add a tablespoon to my children's water bottles and even offer it by the spoonful. I personally love it by the spoonful as a cough syrup. It takes the scratchy feeling our throats get at times.
Make sure you store in the refrigerator and it lasts quite some time.
