Belle Isle Aquarium and Conservancy
A few years ago, I had a membership to the Detroit Zoo and
we always spent a lot of time in the aquarium house because it was easy for the
kids to see the tanks and fish are pretty cool!
Plus, it was a warm shelter on those cold winter visits. For whatever reason at the time, I never
thought to visit the Belle Isle Aquarium.
Recently, we visited the Aquarium and it was the perfect dose of fun we
were searching for!
Our Visit
We enjoyed looking at the different fish and learned a lot about the effects of plastic on our waterways. Did you know that gum is made of plastic? We also learned about microplastics and how they have a big impact on our lakes and oceans. The aquarium
had a lot of fish that you can find in the Great Lakes including sturgeons and bass. They also had saltwater
tanks with interesting marine life such as sea horses and an electric eel which was my son's favorite.
The Belle Isle Aquarium is located on Belle Isle which is a
Michigan State Park so it requires a state park pass to enter. For those without the pass, you can purchase
a day pass and enjoy a relaxing day at the parks and water’s edge. The aquarium and conservancy are free to
enter. The aquarium is small and takes
about 30 minutes to complete and once you are done we suggest walking over to the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservancy and
visit the different gardens. Visiting the conservancy is the perfect way to warm up on a cold winter day.
History
The aquarium and conservancy have a unique story to
tell. The aquarium is the oldest in the
United States and was designed by Albert Kahn who is known as the “architect of
Detroit” because of the his many architectural designs such as the Fisher Building,
Cadillac Place, and Ford Motor Company's Highland Park factory where the Model T was constructed.
Both the aquarium and conservancy closed in 2005 due to the
City of Detroit’s hardships. It was then
reopened in 2012 and was taken over by the state making Belle Isle a state park. Now the buildings are slowly being restored as they conserve all its beauty.

Winter in Michigan is cold but it doesn't have to be boring! We are only a few days away from Winter Break which means my kids will be home for 16 days from school. While this is a great opportunity to relax at home and make forts while binge watching old movies, it is also a great opportunity to plan a staycation.
My list of things to do within the Detroit area is endless. I am always finding new things to do and there's so much to see and do. Instead of creating a list for myself, I thought I'd share.

Rochester Big Bright Light Show
The Big Bright Light Show downtown Rochester is worth a visit! Make a day out of it. Head down early and go shopping on Main Street and then dine at one of the many restaurants. Kids love dining at Red Knapp's Dairy Bar where you will find the best milkshakes around! Since you are downtown Rochester it is worth heading over to the Royal Park Hotel lobby and checking out the Gingerbread Forest display.
Campus Martius Skating Rink
Skating downtown during the holidays is so much fun. The brightly lit tree and decorated area puts everyone into the holiday spirit.
Detroit Institute of Arts
If you live within Oakland, Macomb, and Macomb counties, you receive FREE unlimited visits to the DIA. On any given weekend you will find activities for families with children of all ages. Everything from free movies at the theatre to arts and crafts.
American Coney Island versus Lafayette Coney Island
On the corner of Michigan Avenue and Lafayette is where you will find the Detroit coney. The Detroit famous coney is known for its chili, raw onion, and mustard. Recently, we stopped into Lafayette and grabbed a coney dog. The menu is simple with just coneys, fries, and soup. Next time we will have to head over to American Coney to decide which one is our favorite place. The coney restaurants are right next door to each other and have been in rivalry since the 1930's on who has the best coney. Decide for yourself and head downtown for a coney dog!
Belle Isle Conservatory
Do you want to escape a winter day and feel like you are on an exotic tropical vacation!?! Visit the Belle Isle Conservatory and walk through The Palm House and learn about exotic and rare plants around the world. Visiting the conservatory is completely free. You will need a state park pass to enter Belle Isle.

One of my favorite things to do around the holidays is to dress up in our Sunday best and visit the Fox Theatre for a holiday musical. After an afternoon show, we always make our way to see the holiday lights at Campus Martius and do a little shopping at the markets. These memorable experiences in Detroit will last forever and this year we are beyond excited because Rudolph is coming to the D!

About the Show
Elmo is
inspired to learn a magic trick when he meets magician extraordinaire Justin,
who has come to Sesame Street to perform a magic show. But there’s one
problem…Elmo doesn’t know how to do magic!
Through Justin’s encouragement to practice, work hard and never give up,
Elmo embarks on an extraordinary journey.
He learns that it’s okay to make mistakes and that magic can be found
anywhere when you believe in yourself and the power of what’s yet to be. Cookie
Monster and Gonger uncover the science and fun of baking while Abby Cadabby
experiences the transformative abilities of caterpillars. Big Bird learns about
the magnifying magic of shadow puppetry while Rosita orchestrates a rhythmic
beat using everyday objects around her. And artist Grover mixes up the pigment
power of the three primary colors. With high-energy dance numbers and a

A Christmas Story was a classic in my home growing up as a child. It played on TV all day long. One year we even gifted my father the leg lamp as a gift and as you can imagine...it was a hit! It even came in the Fragile wooden box!
As Christmas approaches and family begins to make their way to town, I can't think of a better way to spend quality family time other than attending A Christmas Story The Musical at The Fox Theatre! A Christmas Story The Musical is making it's way to Detroit and it's a must see!

The Fox Theatre
The amount of beauty this building possess is indisputable. No matter how many times I visit, I am always taken back by the amount of detail and the intricate design of this building. It is extra special to visit during the holidays. The decorations and entertainment bring so much holiday cheer. A must see in December is The Christmas Carol.

Campus Martius
There's a lot to do at Campus Martius and visiting at night when it is dark is always special. Be sure to bring your ice skates or you can rent skates. The entire family can enjoy some hot cocoa outdoors while skating in the heart of the city. Festive adult beverages are also available to enjoy as you mingle with friends and family.

Cadillac Square
Cadillac Square is a must visit. It is adjacent to Campus Martius so it's easy to skate and then walk over to Cadillac Square. You will find everything from a little outdoor market to the most elaborately decorated tent for you to relax and get cozy.

The
complete adventure of the Academy Award® winning tale will be told live in
this production, capturing the dynamic of two royal sisters, Anna and Elsa.
Anna, a girl with an extraordinary heart, embarks on an epic journey to find
her sister, the magical Elsa, who is determined to remain secluded as she
finally feels free to test the limits of her powers. Rugged
mountain man Kristoff, his loyal reindeer Sven, the lovable and hilarious
snowman Olaf and the mystical trolls help Anna along the way in this story
about love conquering fear. Audiences
will get to sing along with such musical masterpieces as “Let it Go,” “Do You
Want to Build a Snowman?” and “Fixer Upper.”
“In our many years of producing Disney On Ice shows, Feld Entertainment
has been waiting for a film like this,” says producer Nicole Feld. “While it
might seem obvious that Frozen is
well suited for the ice, this Disney On
Ice production will touch audiences emotionally through innovative show
elements and world-class skating.”
Frozen directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee add, “Seeing audiences

Entertainment and watch their creation come to life on ice, is thrilling.”
In Disney On
Ice presents Frozen, Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse take the audience
through the magical story based in Arendelle, with special appearances by
beloved Disney princesses and favorite characters from Disney/Pixar’s Toy
Story and Finding Nemo and Disney’s The Lion King, who
come together to prove that true love is the greatest power of all. Director
Patty Vincent says, “Our goal is to showcase these heartwarming characters in a
way that allows the audience to cheer and sing along throughout this emotional
journey.”
To create a completely immersive
experience for the audience, the set design will encompass the space from the
ice surface up through the air, drawing everyone into the story and closer to
the characters. Families will feel that they are trekking up to the North
Mountains with Anna, Kristoff and Sven, and they will tangibly experience the
storm inside Elsa. Elsa’s magic will be enhanced by state-of-the art special
effects while her emotions will be conveyed through powerful skating.
