A Minimalist Approach to the Holidays
The holidays are here and we are all busy creating our wish lists and letting Santa know what we want for Christmas. My kids have been busy circling toys from the Target holiday catalog and they are so excited! Even Amazon sent us a toy catalog which is extremely smart! I've been gently reminding them that just because it's on your wish list doesn't mean you will receive it. It's just that a "wish list"! I think most of us would agree that many of the our childrens' toys are simply just taking up space and not being played with!
I'm a minimalist at heart but with kids it's hard! They love their stuff and the hard core truth is I love my stuff also! Recently, I cleaned out my sons room while he was at school and moved a lot of his toys to the basement. Having a clean room has changed his world of play. Now instead of having a roomful of toys he picks one or two toys from the basement and brings them upstairs to play with. It has been such a game changer for all of us!
Now with the holidays approaching fast we are facing the toy overload once again! Yes, we can donate to the Salvation Army and make room for new ones but chances are the new toys will also make their way to our basement. It makes me think about the story of the Velveteen Rabbit. It's only real if a child loves you so much!
“Real isn't how you are made,” said the Skin Horse. “It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but really loves you, then you become Real.”
Last year we went on vacation for Christmas and woke up on Christmas morning on the beach! It was unique and special. We checked one large luggage filled with our stockings and some of Santa's little surprises! Yes, Santa found us in Florida and gifted us with small gifts that could make their way home on an airplane! It was so nice to keep things simple and still just as magical!
We didn't have any big expectations and loved our day on the beach. It was the first year that I didn't feel stressed out over Christmas. It was truly simple and memorable! We had an experience for Christmas and that made it so special.

With the minimalist term being more frequently tossed around it makes me think about ways to give meaningful gifts that are just as simple and special as our Christmas vacation was. My biggest takeaway from last year is a sleigh full of toys will not bring joy all year round but the memories we made always bring a smile to our faces and fills our hearts.
One way to create a year full of joy is to ask our kids what activities bring them joy and have them create a list. For an example, my daughter loves gymnastics, jumping on trampolines, and swimming. With a list like this we can encourage her to ask for passes to Sky Zone or swim lesson to Goldfish Swim School. Something that gets us out of the house during the long winter months and promotes happiness!
This year I encourage us all to think with a minimalist mind and think of ways to bring joy that lasts longer than a basement full of toys waiting to be loved!
Many businesses offer awesome holiday packages. One to consider is Goldfish Swim School. Each holiday season they offer a holiday package for new members. I've partnered with Goldfish Swim School to offer $10 off a holiday package using the promo code holidaydanielle. The holiday package is offered for $205 and with the $10 off promotion you will receive it for $195!

"Rudolph with your nose so bright
Won't you lead my sleigh tonight"
One of my favorite things to do around the holidays is to dress up in our Sunday best and visit the Fox Theatre for a holiday musical. After an afternoon show, we always make our way to see the holiday lights at Campus Martius and do a little shopping at the markets. These memorable experiences in Detroit will last forever and this year we are beyond excited because Rudolph is coming to the D!
Following five successful years of touring and more than 500
performances, the “most famous reindeer of all” from the longest running and
highest rated holiday television special will fly into the Fox Theatre on
Sunday, December 1 with the critically acclaimed Rudolph the Red-NosedReindeer: The Musical.
The world’s most famous
reindeer and a holly jolly cast of iconic characters including Hermey the Elf,
Yukon Cornelius and the Abominable Snow Monster will help Santa save Christmas
during two performances at 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

The holidays are approaching fast and so is all the fun to be had! Detroit is my favorite place to visit during the holidays. I love the lights at Campus Martius, the cheer and laughter found in restaurants, and the energy the city brings during this joyous time of year.

The Fox Theatre
The amount of beauty this building possess is indisputable. No matter how many times I visit, I am always taken back by the amount of detail and the intricate design of this building. It is extra special to visit during the holidays. The decorations and entertainment bring so much holiday cheer. A must see in December is The Christmas Carol.
The Christmas Carol is playing at The Fox Theatre on Thursday, December 20th. You can purchase tickets at 313Presents.
Campus Martius
There's a lot to do at Campus Martius and visiting at night when it is dark is always special. Be sure to bring your ice skates or you can rent skates. The entire family can enjoy some hot cocoa outdoors while skating in the heart of the city. Festive adult beverages are also available to enjoy as you mingle with friends and family.

Cadillac Square is a must visit. It is adjacent to Campus Martius so it's easy to skate and then walk over to Cadillac Square. You will find everything from a little outdoor market to the most elaborately decorated tent for you to relax and get cozy.

I think we all know the feeling we get after Christmas when those toys Santa imagined being a huge hit just didn't have the "wow" factor that the jolly old man wished for. It happens every year. Santa had what he thought to be the perfect gift and there it sits, new, and lonely with a pile of other unloved toys.
Well this year we're getting smart and asking for swim lessons for Christmas! It's the perfect gift from Grandma and Grandpa! The kids are so excited to go to Goldfish Swim School! They even added a swimsuit to their wish list! We will be able to burn energy and get the sillies out each week all while continuing to learn to swim! A bonus is you will even find Grandma and Grandpa coming to watch us swim!
Or how about those days when the kids are bouncing off the walls because they are going stir crazy from being locked indoors? In Michigan we get a lot of those days! Those are the days you wish you had an outlet. Something to do to help burn all that energy bottled up. Not this year! We have a plan.
Goldfish Swim School has the perfect gift package available for the holidays. These packages are available at all locations throughout the Metro Detroit area. It truly is the perfect the gift! I am thankful each week that we have the opportunity to learn to swim while having fun. The kids absolutely love it and yours will too!

I mixed each ingredient with hot water and also added a splash of white vinegar to each bowl and let soak for a few hours. Once done I stored in the refrigerator until I needed to use as my center piece. It's important to remember that boiled eggs should not sit out for more than a few hours if you plan to eat.
I was very pleased with how they turned out. This will definitely be a new family tradition!
