A Minimalist Approach to the Holidays
The holidays are here and we are all busy creating our wish lists and letting Santa know what we want for Christmas. My kids have been busy circling toys from the Target holiday catalog and they are so excited! Even Amazon sent us a toy catalog which is extremely smart! I've been gently reminding them that just because it's on your wish list doesn't mean you will receive it. It's just that a "wish list"! I think most of us would agree that many of the our childrens' toys are simply just taking up space and not being played with!
I'm a minimalist at heart but with kids it's hard! They love their stuff and the hard core truth is I love my stuff also! Recently, I cleaned out my sons room while he was at school and moved a lot of his toys to the basement. Having a clean room has changed his world of play. Now instead of having a roomful of toys he picks one or two toys from the basement and brings them upstairs to play with. It has been such a game changer for all of us!
We didn't have any big expectations and loved our day on the beach. It was the first year that I didn't feel stressed out over Christmas. It was truly simple and memorable! We had an experience for Christmas and that made it so special.
| How about passes to go ice skating! |
This year I encourage us all to think with a minimalist mind and think of ways to bring joy that lasts longer than a basement full of toys waiting to be loved!

The can’t-miss live stage show, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood LIVE! King For A Day, comes to the Fox Theatre for two performances on Saturday, April 27 at 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
In Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood LIVE! King For a Day, audiences “ride along” on an exciting adventure as Daniel learns what it takes to be king.
Produced by Fred Rogers Productions and Mills Entertainment, the engaging, full-scale musical production is filled with magical moments and sing-along fun, and features favorite characters from the Neighborhood of Make-Believe. It’s “royally” a good time for the whole family!
The first TV series inspired by the iconic, award-winning Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood stars 4-year-old Daniel Tiger, who invites young viewers into his world, giving them a kid’s-eye view of his life. One of the key ingredients that makes the series a standout is its
groundbreaking use of catchy musical strategies, grounded in Fred Rogers’ social-emotional curriculum, that reinforce each theme and that preschoolers and parents can sing – and use together – in their daily lives.

Schools nationwide will come together to celebrate March is Reading Month to spread awareness of the importance of reading each and every day! I bet many of you are volunteering to read to your child's class! There are many ways to make reading fun but before I dive in on all the fun ways to make reading fun...I'd like to share these eye opening stats.
I've received the above information from Nagy & Herman, 1987.
When I first read this I was alarmed. It made me realize how important it is to read every single day. The more we read, the more we learn. The more we learn, the more we can achieve. The more we can achieve, the more we can make a difference.
'
I have to remind myself that reading can be done in so many different ways. For an example, my daughter is into reading to me and she is 3. She's not reading the words but she is looking at the pictures and telling me a story based on the pictures. This is reading and it is fun! It is also a great way to develop vocabulary.
As an English Language Development Specialist (sounds fancy huh!) but in light I'm a teacher of English. I've found that reading comprehension begins with good reading strategies. These strategies may include using pictures for clues, stopping mid text to go back and reread for understanding, and making connections while reading. We all can learn to become great readers as long as we practice reading!
Below I've shared some ways to encourage reading at home and make it fun. After all reading is for fun!
Clap out Syllables
If you come across a word that is long and needs to be broken down into syllables...clap it out!Example dinner ( 2 claps), holiday ( 3 claps)
Stop and Make Connections while Reading
Role Play Characters
Create a Reading Space
If you just want to make if fun for the month of March, pitch a little tent in the basement or play area with sleeping bags and snuggle together and read.

Performance Schedule:Saturday, March 23 11 a.m., 2 p.m. & 5 p.m.Sunday, March 24 11 a.m. & 2 p.m.
Once a week we enjoy dining out. It provides us the opportunity to forget about cooking and no dirty dishes! I spend most of my time in our kitchen when at home. Some days I never leave the kitchen! At least that's how it feels. So it's wonderful to dine out once in awhile.
When it comes to choosing a restaurant to eat at, I usually lean towards s cuisine that I can't make myself at home. Thai food and sushi are two great examples. I simply can't top that at home. But I also look for places that are kid friendly. Many establishments have a "kids eat free" day and this makes for a great way to save a little money when eating out. Plus it's safe to say it's "kid friendly".
Below is a list of places that are currently offering "kids eat free" meals on certain days. Please note that this may change as establishments make adjustments to their menu and promotions. I'd advise calling ahead to confirm their "kids eat free" promotion is still available.
This is a list that I will continue to work on, make changes, and add restaurants as we learn of more places. Please comment and share with us any other places where kids eat free and I will add it to our list. Thank you for your help!
