Can you imagine the look on every kids face when they see all their favorite characters from Nick Jr. together at once as they sing, clap, dance, and move to the music with all their favorite Nick Jr. friends!
Nickelodeon and VStar Entertainment Group present Nick Jr. Live! “Move to the Music”, an all-new, one-of-a-kind adventure. For the first time on stage together, this musical spectacular features characters from multiple Nick Jr. hit animated series, including Bubble Guppies, PAW Patrol (produced by Spin Master Entertainment) , Dora The Explorer, Shimmer and Shine, Blue’s Clues and You, Blaze and the Monster Machines and Top Wing. Nick Jr. Live! “Move
to the Music” follows Dora and her PAW co-hosts, Marshall and Rubble, as
they invite their Nick Jr. friends to come together for a music-filled
production. Bubble Guppies’ Molly and
Gil, Rod and Penny from Top Wing,
Shimmer and Shine, and even Blue from the new Blue’s Clues &You! are throwing a Nick Jr. celebration.
Audiences will be transported to familiar Nick Jr. locations, including
Bubbletucky and Zahramay Falls. The unforgettable celebration will feature live
appearances, special on-screen guests and audience participation to engage the
whole family.
With innovative costuming and a Broadway style set, Nick Jr. Live! is a perfect way to
introduce theater to young children. The show is split into two acts with an
intermission and will include original music as well as familiar tunes from
Nick Jr. shows. A limited number of V.I.P. packages are available for each

Belle Isle Aquarium and Conservancy
A few years ago, I had a membership to the Detroit Zoo and
we always spent a lot of time in the aquarium house because it was easy for the
kids to see the tanks and fish are pretty cool!
Plus, it was a warm shelter on those cold winter visits. For whatever reason at the time, I never
thought to visit the Belle Isle Aquarium.
Recently, we visited the Aquarium and it was the perfect dose of fun we
were searching for!
Our Visit
We enjoyed looking at the different fish and learned a lot about the effects of plastic on our waterways. Did you know that gum is made of plastic? We also learned about microplastics and how they have a big impact on our lakes and oceans. The aquarium
had a lot of fish that you can find in the Great Lakes including sturgeons and bass. They also had saltwater
tanks with interesting marine life such as sea horses and an electric eel which was my son's favorite.
The Belle Isle Aquarium is located on Belle Isle which is a
Michigan State Park so it requires a state park pass to enter. For those without the pass, you can purchase
a day pass and enjoy a relaxing day at the parks and water’s edge. The aquarium and conservancy are free to
enter. The aquarium is small and takes
about 30 minutes to complete and once you are done we suggest walking over to the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservancy and
visit the different gardens. Visiting the conservancy is the perfect way to warm up on a cold winter day.
History
The aquarium and conservancy have a unique story to
tell. The aquarium is the oldest in the
United States and was designed by Albert Kahn who is known as the “architect of
Detroit” because of the his many architectural designs such as the Fisher Building,
Cadillac Place, and Ford Motor Company's Highland Park factory where the Model T was constructed.
Both the aquarium and conservancy closed in 2005 due to the
City of Detroit’s hardships. It was then
reopened in 2012 and was taken over by the state making Belle Isle a state park. Now the buildings are slowly being restored as they conserve all its beauty.

Winter in Michigan is cold but it doesn't have to be boring! We are only a few days away from Winter Break which means my kids will be home for 16 days from school. While this is a great opportunity to relax at home and make forts while binge watching old movies, it is also a great opportunity to plan a staycation.
My list of things to do within the Detroit area is endless. I am always finding new things to do and there's so much to see and do. Instead of creating a list for myself, I thought I'd share.

Rochester Big Bright Light Show
The Big Bright Light Show downtown Rochester is worth a visit! Make a day out of it. Head down early and go shopping on Main Street and then dine at one of the many restaurants. Kids love dining at Red Knapp's Dairy Bar where you will find the best milkshakes around! Since you are downtown Rochester it is worth heading over to the Royal Park Hotel lobby and checking out the Gingerbread Forest display.
Campus Martius Skating Rink
Skating downtown during the holidays is so much fun. The brightly lit tree and decorated area puts everyone into the holiday spirit.
Detroit Institute of Arts
If you live within Oakland, Macomb, and Macomb counties, you receive FREE unlimited visits to the DIA. On any given weekend you will find activities for families with children of all ages. Everything from free movies at the theatre to arts and crafts.
American Coney Island versus Lafayette Coney Island
On the corner of Michigan Avenue and Lafayette is where you will find the Detroit coney. The Detroit famous coney is known for its chili, raw onion, and mustard. Recently, we stopped into Lafayette and grabbed a coney dog. The menu is simple with just coneys, fries, and soup. Next time we will have to head over to American Coney to decide which one is our favorite place. The coney restaurants are right next door to each other and have been in rivalry since the 1930's on who has the best coney. Decide for yourself and head downtown for a coney dog!
Belle Isle Conservatory
Do you want to escape a winter day and feel like you are on an exotic tropical vacation!?! Visit the Belle Isle Conservatory and walk through The Palm House and learn about exotic and rare plants around the world. Visiting the conservatory is completely free. You will need a state park pass to enter Belle Isle.

A Minimalist Approach to the Holidays
The holidays are here and we are all busy creating our wish lists and letting Santa know what we want for Christmas. My kids have been busy circling toys from the Target holiday catalog and they are so excited! Even Amazon sent us a toy catalog which is extremely smart! I've been gently reminding them that just because it's on your wish list doesn't mean you will receive it. It's just that a "wish list"! I think most of us would agree that many of the our childrens' toys are simply just taking up space and not being played with!
I'm a minimalist at heart but with kids it's hard! They love their stuff and the hard core truth is I love my stuff also! Recently, I cleaned out my sons room while he was at school and moved a lot of his toys to the basement. Having a clean room has changed his world of play. Now instead of having a roomful of toys he picks one or two toys from the basement and brings them upstairs to play with. It has been such a game changer for all of us!
Now with the holidays approaching fast we are facing the toy overload once again! Yes, we can donate to the Salvation Army and make room for new ones but chances are the new toys will also make their way to our basement. It makes me think about the story of the Velveteen Rabbit. It's only real if a child loves you so much!
“Real isn't how you are made,” said the Skin Horse. “It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but really loves you, then you become Real.”
Last year we went on vacation for Christmas and woke up on Christmas morning on the beach! It was unique and special. We checked one large luggage filled with our stockings and some of Santa's little surprises! Yes, Santa found us in Florida and gifted us with small gifts that could make their way home on an airplane! It was so nice to keep things simple and still just as magical!
We didn't have any big expectations and loved our day on the beach. It was the first year that I didn't feel stressed out over Christmas. It was truly simple and memorable! We had an experience for Christmas and that made it so special.

With the minimalist term being more frequently tossed around it makes me think about ways to give meaningful gifts that are just as simple and special as our Christmas vacation was. My biggest takeaway from last year is a sleigh full of toys will not bring joy all year round but the memories we made always bring a smile to our faces and fills our hearts.
One way to create a year full of joy is to ask our kids what activities bring them joy and have them create a list. For an example, my daughter loves gymnastics, jumping on trampolines, and swimming. With a list like this we can encourage her to ask for passes to Sky Zone or swim lesson to Goldfish Swim School. Something that gets us out of the house during the long winter months and promotes happiness!

Schools nationwide will come together to celebrate March is Reading Month to spread awareness of the importance of reading each and every day! I bet many of you are volunteering to read to your child's class! There are many ways to make reading fun but before I dive in on all the fun ways to make reading fun...I'd like to share these eye opening stats.
When I first read this I was alarmed. It made me realize how important it is to read every single day. The more we read, the more we learn. The more we learn, the more we can achieve. The more we can achieve, the more we can make a difference.

I have to remind myself that reading can be done in so many different ways. For an example, my daughter is into reading to me and she is 3. She's not reading the words but she is looking at the pictures and telling me a story based on the pictures. This is reading and it is fun! It is also a great way to develop vocabulary.
As an English Language Development Specialist (sounds fancy huh!) but in light I'm a teacher of English. I've found that reading comprehension begins with good reading strategies. These strategies may include using pictures for clues, stopping mid text to go back and reread for understanding, and making connections while reading. We all can learn to become great readers as long as we practice reading!
Below I've shared some ways to encourage reading at home and make it fun. After all reading is for fun!
Clap out Syllables
If you come across a word that is long and needs to be broken down into syllables...clap it out!Example dinner ( 2 claps), holiday ( 3 claps)
Stop and Make Connections while Reading
Good readers can make connections with characters and settings within the book. If the setting is at a park, stop and a talk about a time when you were at the park. Kids love to talk about their past experiences and it helps students connect to the book which improves comprehension as you read.
Role Play Characters
When we role play characters through movement and play, we are improving our vocabulary. We are also retelling the book which develops our comprehension as readers.
Recently, I've read the book The Mitten with my children. After I read the book aloud to them, they took turns retelling the book using animal characters from the book. This was a great way to add play to our daily reading. My daughter had so much fun that now she always asks to read the book and role play using her barn animals.
Create a Reading Space
Do you have a special reading space in your home? If not, consider making a little reading nook area. I've seen many cute reading spaces with little home libraries on Pinterest. Gather some fun pillows, bean bag chairs, a lamp, book shelves, and create a fun area. Then dive into a good book.

Read Wordless Picture Books
Many advanced readers forget how wonderful picture books are. The illustrations are enjoyable for everyone, including adults. When using picture books, readers can expand their thinking and vocabulary as they "tell" the story using their own creative thinking.
A few of my favorite books are Fossil by Bill Thomson and Flashlight by Lizi Boyd.
Visit your Public Library
During March many public libraries host special events in honor of March is Reading Month. It is also fun to go and check out books. I am amazed at what libraries have to check out. Recently we fond Vox books which is audio books that read to the child. This is great for early readers and English Learners.

We started our party off with an hour of fun swim. It was great to hear the cheer and laughter coming from all angles of the pool. Once a week we enjoy dining out. It provides us the opportunity to forget about cooking and no dirty dishes! I spend most of my time in our kitchen when at home. Some days I never leave the kitchen! At least that's how it feels. So it's wonderful to dine out once in awhile.
When it comes to choosing a restaurant to eat at, I usually lean towards s cuisine that I can't make myself at home. Thai food and sushi are two great examples. I simply can't top that at home. But I also look for places that are kid friendly. Many establishments have a "kids eat free" day and this makes for a great way to save a little money when eating out. Plus it's safe to say it's "kid friendly".

Fox Theatre for seven performances from Thursday, February 28 to Sunday, March
3, 2019.

It’s the day of the Great Adventure Bay Race between Adventure Bay’s Mayor
Goodway and Foggy Bottom’s Mayor Humdinger, but Mayor Goodway is nowhere
to be found. PAW Patrol to the rescue! Ryder summons Marshall, Chase,
Skye, Rubble, Rocky, Zuma and Everest to rescue Mayor Goodway and to run
the race in her place. Using their unique skills and
teamwork, the pups show that “no job is too big, no pup is too small,” and
share lessons for all ages about citizenship, social skills and problem-solving
as they make several heroic rescues on their race to the finish line.
The show includes two acts and an intermission and engages
audiences with Bunraku puppetry, an innovative costuming approach that brings
the PAW Patrol characters to life on stage with their vehicles and pup packs.
The performance features up-tempo music and a cleverly written script that is a
wonderful introduction to live theater for kids. Classic theatrical scenery,
along with a high-tech video wall, visually transports families to an authentic
PAW Patrol environment, including locations from the TV series, like Adventure
Bay, The Lookout, Seal Island, Farmer Yumi's farm and Jake's Mountain. Special
interactive video allows the audience to participate via interviews, solve
clues with the Pups, follow Mayor Goodway and much more.
