I can't help but get a smile on my face when I think of Junie B. Jones. I just loved this book series as a little girl and still enjoy it today through the lens of students at school. It won't be long and my daughter will be reading the Junie B. Jones series of books. Now you can see Junie B. Jones on stage at the City Theatre in Detroit on March 23 and 24th.

Jones, a musical based on the books by Barbara Park, will make an
appearance at the City Theatre in The District Detroit for five performances on Saturday, March 23 through
Sunday, March 24.

Outspoken, precocious, lovable
Junie B. Jones stars in a colorful, funny, fast-paced musical about new
friends, new glasses, sugar cookies, the annual kickball tournament, and other
various first-grade angst-ridden situations. Follow her adventures as she
writes down the story of her life in her “Top-Secret Personal Beeswax Journal.”
This new musical is based on four volumes in
Barbara Park’s Junie B. Jones series
of books, illustrated by Denise Brunkus and published by Random House: Junie B, First Grader (at Last!); Junie B, Boss of Lunch; Junie B, One-Man
Band; and Top-Secret Personal
Beeswax: A Journal by Junie B (and Me!).

Jones is a musical by Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich (The
Broadway-bound musical based on the film Ever
After, Dear Edwina, Taylor the Latte
Boy) based on the best-selling books by Barbara Park. The production was
originally directed by Peter Flynn (TheaterWorksUSA’s Nate the Great, Henry and Mudge, Artistic Director of Hangar
Theatre) and choreographed by Devanand Janki (Off-Broadway: Zanna Don’t, Cupid & Psyche). The
scenic design is by Luke Hegel-Cantarella (TheaterWorksUSA’s Corduroy), and the costumes are by Lora
LaVon. This 60-minute musical is recommended for audiences age 5 and up. The
show was nominated in 2006 for the Lucille Lortel Awards for Outstanding
Musical and Outstanding Choreography.
After a brief New York City-area tour in spring
2004, Junie B. Jones premiered
Off-Broadway at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in July 2004, and is now one of TheaterWorksUSA’s
most popular productions. Junie B. Jones
began its national tour in fall 2004, and a second national touring company
began touring in spring 2005. The show returned for engagements at the Lortel
Theatre in November 2005 and March 2008. Junie
B. Jones is able, as are all TheaterWorksUSA productions, to play a wide
range of venues, from large Broadway-sized performing arts centers in major
metropolitan areas to elementary school cafeterias in small towns.

I met a traveling musician from the South and the one thing I'll never forget him saying was how much pride Detroiters have. Of all the cities he's adventured off to, Detroit in his eyes, has the most pride and loyalty. If you ask me that's the best compliment ever!
As a college graduate of Wayne State University my loyalty is rooted. I remember those days traveling into the city before Smart Phones and Google Maps. After attending a few years at WSU the city became my playground. Everything from the architecture, history, and arts pumped energy through my bloodstream. It was clear to me...the city awakened me!
But Detroiters, let's be real. While we may have been loyal to Detroit, it hasn't always been as loyal back. I remember days when the sidewalks and streets were not plowed or shoveled in the dead of winter. I would have to truck through snow up to my calves while trying to get to a restaurant.
One summer we went to a party on Gratiot Avenue. I remember hanging out and not one street light worked on Gratiot. Imagine that! The city was dark! While I felt safe at the party, I remember the host telling me to not walk off alone.
I recall back when Kwame Kilpatrick was mayor. It was a complete shit show for Detroit. The entire nation got wind of the news. Sad times!
Recently a friend came in town from San Francisco and it was a no brainer to head downtown for dinner. Many new restaurants are locally sourcing their food. With the urban gardens and Eastern Market readily available, it's great to see collaboration between our local farmers and restaurants.
Below are a few recommendations and all three have the ture "Detroit Pride" I've mentioned earlier. They source locally and that's what I call loyalty!

Have you been wanting to go to a Pistons Game or see The Red Wings? I can't think of a better time than now! Game Day in the D is where it is at!
The District Detroit is where world class sports and entertainment meet within 5 neighborhoods. The Fox Theatre is located within the Columbia Street Corner.
While attending a recent show at The Fox Theatre the band lead took a moment to comment on how beautifully distracting the theatre is. He went on to elaborate on how The Fox Theatre is the most beautiful place he's ever performed at and continued to say how proud we should be.
Now that 2018 has arrived and times are changing for Detroit it's time to shift our mindset. The next time you are looking for good entertainment and food, head to Detroit!

The lights are on! Detroit is brighter than ever! Yes Gratiot has new street lights and it looks great! It's time to leave the "dark" detroit in the past!
Detroit has captivated its own style. I call it the modern rustic recycled look! Everything has yesterday's charm with today's swing.

With the new Little Caesars Arena, we now have the Pistons playing in Detroit. It is so nice to have the Lions, Tigers, Pistons, and The Red Wings all together.Have you been wanting to go to a Pistons Game or see The Red Wings? I can't think of a better time than now! A few years ago I had a studio loft located at the center of Arts, Beats, & Eats. As you can imagine, it was a FUN and action packed weekend! I even recall a huge storm that literally wiped out the entire event for a few hours!
The following year I volunteered to work a beer tent for the Royal Oak Jaycees and rode my bike to and from the event. These past few years have looked a little different as we are now in tow with two little kids. We park at the Royal Oak High school and take the free shuttle over to the event.

The Arts
Michigan has some talented artist and what better way to admire their work than the festival. You will find local photography,pottery, and, paintings. I am always amazed at how creative these artist are.
The Eats
Restaurants from all around Detroit show off their signature dishes as you will find everything from burgers and hot dogs for the kids to gourmet lobster bisque soup. Sip it all down with a refreshing Michigan brew.
The Beats
Entertainment is never disappointing at Arts, Beats, and Eats. You will find many different stages with different genre's of music. Anywhere from alternative to jazz. They even have a kids stage with some really cool stuff! Some of the major artist you will find performing this year are Candlebox, B52's, and 311. Check out the complete line up here.
